Highcliffe House Review - A Luxury Bed And Breakfast In Lynton Devon -mexinter

Recently we were invited to stay at Highcliffe House, a luxury bed and breakfast in Lynton, North Devon.  Highcliffe House is a 5 star AA rated bed and breakfast with views overlooking the Bristol channel. The winner of many awards including Tripadvisor's Travellers Choice Award 2022, this boutique adult-only bed and breakfast is perfectly situated to explore the Exmoor National Park.

Welcome

Highcliffe House

Unfortunately, the heavens decided to open just before we arrived and as we sheltered in our car in the car park, Robert, one of the owners, came to our rescue with a big umbrella. With a warm friendly nature, Robert sheltered us from the rain as he escorted us into Highcliffe House.

lounge

Robert showed us into the lounge where we made ourselves comfortable. The lounge was beautifully decorated and Robert explained the paintings on the wall were collected from his and his partner Richards's, travels around the world.

As we dried off and relaxed, a complimentary cream tea was served. This isn't special treatment as every guest is offered this on check-in, that's the lovely welcome you get at this luxury establishment. The scones were warm and fresh too, made in-house, from a recipe from Richard's grandmother. Topped with homemade blackcurrant jam and local clotted cream, as well as a pot of hot fresh tea, make for a delicious welcome!

After the scrumptious cream tea, Robert showed us to our room. Each room is decorated individually with top-of-the-range furnishings from Laura Ashley, Sanderson or Zophany.

Bedroom

bed

We were staying in the Kipscombe room. Our room was on the third floor with amazing sea views over Lynton and Lynmouth.

Our room had a super king-size bed with an impressive gilt-covered headboard, gorgeously decorated wallpaper, silk curtains, a desk, a chest of drawers, and a wardrobe. The room had a lovely smell that was subtle and not overpowering, and Robert informed us that they use special fragrances in each room, however, if we didn't like it to let him know.

hospitality tray

A tea and coffee tray with Borders biscuits was welcome, and a bottle of water was also provided. Robert explained that if we wanted fresh milk then that was available in the fridge downstairs. I asked for soya milk previous to our visit and that was available to me throughout my stay.

table and chairs
The view from the top floor room was double aspect with two windows allowing you to gaze upon the sea view below. Of course, the British weather is always changeable but with the combination of sun and rain, I managed to get a fabulous photo of a rainbow from our window.

The bathroom was small but perfectly formed with a power shower, toilet, and sink.

bathroom
Complimentary Rituals toiletries were provided, as well as tissues and a vanity set. There was a card in the bathroom encouraging you to save the planet and reuse the towels but if you wish towels can be changed every day if required. The towels were fluffy and soft.

toiletries
There was plenty of space for our clothes in the solid wood wardrobe and chest of drawers, and plenty of hangers. Waffle robes and slippers were also provided in the cupboard as well as a shoe horn and clothes brush.

wardrobe

As you can see from the decor, the furniture and furnishings are traditional, high-end, and luxurious.

tv
Modern touches were the icing on the cake and we were given the use of an IPAD for our stay which was set up in our room as well as a DAB digital radio alarm clock. Our room also had many USB chargers, and an Alexa which was playing relaxing music when we entered the room. The SMART TV allowed us to use Amazon Prime for movies and you could also view YouTube as well as the usual TV channels.

fudge

Local fudge was on the bedside table when we entered the room, another lovely touch! As you can see the room was well-appointed, luxurious and very comfortable.

Public areas

lounge

There are three lounge areas which are tastefully designed. There was also a bar with a good selection of spirits and wine and a new gin area with unusual and local gins.

The prices I thought were fair for both alcohol and hot beverages, for example, a cafertiere of good quality coffee was £2.75.

Marcus

Of course, it would be rude not to partake in a G & T, cheers Mr W!

Breakfast

breakfast room

Breakfast was served in a breakfast room that had plenty of light and amazing sea views.

local produce

Food is locally sourced wherever possible and I can highly recommend the Ivan Clark Butchers back bacon - it was delicious with pancakes and maple syrup. Yum!

breakfast

Breakfast started with a choice of berries or porridge. Then a choice of full cooked breakfast, pancakes and bacon, eggs benedict or eggs royal, or a gourmet breakfast bap. Lots of thick toast and lashings of tea and coffee were also served as well as a choice of juice. Granola and yoghurt parfait and smoothie shots were also available.

cooked breakfast

pancakes

Everything was well cooked and of high quality. Did I say how much I enjoyed the bacon? Well, I did?! The pancakes were a recipe from Richard's grandmother and were super light. Gluten-free and vegan options could also be provided if notified in advance.

Hosting

art

The hosting of Robert and Richard was exceptional during our stay. Nothing was too much trouble for them and they make extremely attentive hosts. They gave us some great recommendations for places to eat dinner as well, more of that below.

They are very well-travelled and it was interesting listening to them talk about their adventures around the world. You can see some of the art they have collected throughout Highcliffe House. They have been recognised for their hosting skills as well as the quality of their establishment by being awarded TripAdvisor's Best Of The Best Award for 2022, and the AA five-star Bed and Breakfast Award.

Location

view patio

In an elevated position up a steep hill, the short 5-minute walk from the centre of Lynton was worth it for these views. In the area, there are plenty of easy walks as well as more strenuous hikes such as those to the Valley Of The Rocks and walks in Lorna Doone country in the Exmoor National Park.

Lynton-Lynmouth-Cliff-Railway

Lynton has some great independent shops and a handful of good restaurants and pubs. We can highly recommend The Old Bank for an upmarket meal with delicious steaks and great vegetarian options. Lynmouth is worth a visit and you can get there from the Lynton and Lynmouth funicular Cliff Railway which is powdered by water and takes less than 5 minutes to ascend. Lynmouth is very picturesque with a small marina, lots of cafes, a couple of pubs, and tourist shops.

mini golf

We had fun playing mini golf in Lynmouth and of course, I beat Mr W (he will say the opposite!).
