Chrome OS Flex Google's new operating system for Old PCs; how to install it?

Google has launched an operating system that can give a second life to all those computers that we no longer use due to slowness and lack of software updates. This new system, called Google OS Flex, is based on Chrome OS, which is the system that comes standard on Google Chromebooks.

Google advertises a fast and modern experience with faster system startups and regular updates. In addition, we do not necessarily need to install it on the hard drive, we can also start it from the Pendrive itself, so it is a portable system.

The main novelty regarding Chrome OS is that it is not limited to a small number of devices. We can even install it on Apple MAC computers.

system requirements

In this link, we can consult the list of compatible models; however, if your computer model does not appear, it will likely work if it was manufactured after 2009.

System requirements are undemanding;

  • x86 or x64 Intel or AMD processor
  • 4 GB of RAM
  • 16 gigabytes of storage

Download Chrome OS Flex and create an installation Pendrive

To install Chrome OS Flex, we first need to access a PC with a Chrome browser installed to download a Chrome browser extension.

We also need a flash drive of at least 8 GB which will be the medium from which we will install Chrome OS Flex.

These are the steps to create the installation pendrive;

  • We open the Chrome browser and enter the Chrome Web Store and add the ChromeBooks Recovery Tool extension
  • In the upper right corner, click on the puzzle piece icon in the Chrome browser, the Chromebooks Recovery Tool extension should appear in the list, and we will start the tool.
  • With the USB memory inserted into the PC, click on Start
  • In the next window, we select Manufacturer and Product
  • There are two drop-downs. In the top one, we select Google Chrome OS Flex, and in the bottom drop-down, we select the latest version of Chrome OS Flex available. Currently, there is only a trial version. Click on continue.
  • We select the Pendrive and click on continue; remember that this step will delete everything that has been stored on the USB memory.
  • Once the process of creating the installation Pendrive has started, it will go through several phases, downloading the system, writing to the Pendrive and finally checking the unit.

Install Chrome OS Flex on a PC

The installation process can vary from one PC to another because, as I mentioned, Chrome OS Flex is focused on older computers. This means that if your PC is not "old enough", we may need to change some settings in the BIOS.

If you plan to try it on a computer after 2015, you must control some technical aspects when configuring the PC's BIOS. Chrome OS Flex is installed on MBR (Master Boot Record) drives, so we will have to disable UEFI drive detection in the BIOS and enable CSM mode. In addition, we must also disable the secure boot or Boot Secure and the TPM security chip in any of its versions.

On a PC from around 2010, you may just have to insert the Pendrive into the PC and look for the USB drive in the boot menu to boot through it.

To access the boot sequence, we must press a key when starting the PC that can vary from one PC to another, for example, F10, Escape, F8...

The installation wizard has the typical configuration questions, system language, keyboard configuration, connect to a WIFI network or access in guest mode or using our Gmail account.

There is one option to consider: the installation of Cloud Ready on the hard drive or USB stick; cloud-ready is basically the operating system itself. It is currently in the testing phase, so perhaps the most advisable thing is to first try installing it on the USB memory and see how it works.
